Wisconsin Car Insurance

As of June 1, 2010, the state of Wisconsin made it mandatory for all drivers to have car insurance or to have shown proof of financial responsibility.  Up until that point, Wisconsin and New Hampshire were the only two states in the country that did not have mandatory car insurance laws. If you do not have car insurance, you are not driving legally in Wisconsin.  If you need to get car insurance, CarInsuranceReviews.com makes it easy for you to find the coverage you need.  Before you get started, you’ll want to learn about the state’s minimum requirements.

Proving Financial Responsibility in Wisconsin

There is only one legal alternative for those who do not want to purchase car insurance.  Drivers must provide proof of financial responsibility by making a $60,000 cash deposit or by filing a bond of equal value with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.  For most people, this is not a viable or even a feasible option.  It is easier and more affordable to simply pay for car insurance.

Wisconsin Car Insurance Minimums

Unless you prove financial responsibility by putting money up front, all Wisconsin drivers with private passenger vehicles must have a car insurance policy issued by a state-approved insurance company.  Wisconsin insurance guidelines state that all drivers must carry bodily injury liability coverage in the amount of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident in order to pay for medical bills or death expenses. Drivers must carry at least $15,000 in property damage liability to pay for vehicle or property damage.

Wisconsin state law also requires drivers to carry at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident in uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. This coverage will protect you if you are involved in an accident with a driver who is responsible for causing the incident but who is not properly insured.

The state of Wisconsin went from not requiring car insurance at all to having some of the highest minimum requirements in the country.  Keep in mind that these amounts are for liability coverage, but liability will not cover any damage to the vehicle you were driving when the accident occurred if you caused the accident.  If you want to protect your vehicle as well, ask your insurance representative about purchasing additional coverage options.
